The Butterfly Sanctuary

The Butterfly Sanctuary on Elba island is dedicated to the memory of Ornella Casnati was inaugurated on May 1, 2009.

The first section of Monte Perone was designed and built by Leonardo Dapporto, Ornella Casnati, Angelino Carta, Umberto Mazzintini with the close collaboration with the National Park of the Tuscan Archipelago and, in particular, the Director Franca Zanichelli.

Along the about two kilometres of trail were placed about 50 signs that illustrate almost all the species of butterflies that can be observed and the main environmental and biogeographical characteristics that make this place so important for these animals.

The second sector of the Sanctuary around San Piero in Campo along the Sentieri dei Graniti.  It was inaugurated in 2019 and includes the main area where Zerynthia cassandra occurs on the island.

In the reduced area of the two Sanctuary sectors we recorded all the butterfly species living on Elba representing one of the most important minor islands for butterfly conservation in Europe.

In June 2nd every year since 2009 Legambiente, the National Park of Tuscan Islands and the ZEN lab organise the"Festa delle farfalle".
