My main interests lie in integrating different approaches to understanding insect diversity.
We apply eclectic taxonomy to identify diversity elements and comparative analyses to describe the distribution patterns of species and their genetic lineages.
We are also strongly involved in conservation actions devoted to safeguarding insects populations through monitoring activity and habitat amelioration.
To achieve our research and conservation goals we make large use of citizen science data also promoting its use in dedicated events.

The IOdatabase is intended as a project integrating several datasets of butterflies from Western Palaearctic harmonised with a shared taxonomy. IOdatabase includes some main datasets provided in recent papers like a revised version of the species checklist from West Palearctic (Middleton Welling et al. 2020) and more than 30000 COI sequences for 512 species. Metadata (coordinates, country, BOLD and Genbank codes are also available). Using these data we also calculated some basic indexes of genetic diversity (number of haplotypes observed and predicted based on rarefaction curves, GST, DST, haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity).
The IOdatabase project is currently contributed by four research units located in Florence University (Italy), Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (Spain), Institut Botànic de Barcelona (Spain) and University of Oulu (Finland).
